Gaoui is a village about 45 minutes north of N’Djamena. It’s definitely a highlight to any tour of the capital. Gaoui is interesting because it’s been there hundreds of years and has a museum built of traditional Sao architecture. It’s also nice to walk around the village, although the weather in Chad was extremely hot, it averaged around 107 F/42 C, and this was supposed to be the cool season.
Right when we walked in to the museum one of the locals found a hedgehog running around!
The children of Gaoui followed us everywhere. They were adorable.
A walk through the village gave us a good glimpse of what life was like here. Which was not easy.
The village is known for its manufacture of pottery. They had a really nice array of pots for sale, I wish I had room to take one home with me.
They fired the pots in a huge outdoor kiln right in the street!
The children followed us all the way through the village and chased after us as we drove off.
Gaoui really was an unexpected highlight.
Next up is Zakouma National Park……
