Bangkok is an incredible city. It’s the capitol of the Kingdom of Thailand with a population of around 14 million. The city is full of life and history. You’ve probably heard or read that the Thai people are extremely nice and hospitable, well it’s completely true. The food is great and everything is very affordable, which is probably why Thailand is such a huge tourist destination. There are many places to see in Thailand but for most people the journey begins here in Bangkok. If you have a short visit or perhaps even a layover here are a couple of things not to miss!
Go to Khao San Road. This is probably the most famous backpacking road in the world. It’s where Leonardo DiCaprio’s character goes in The Beach. It’s full of shops, restaurants, guest houses, hotels, and just about anything you could imagine. At the food carts that line the road you can get everything from ice cream to pad Thai to fried bugs. There are internet cafes, massage parlors, travel agencies and tattoo shops up and down the road in this central area of Bangkok. It is a great place to go on a budget and plan your next move in Thailand or beyond.
Next go to Wat Chana Songkhram. It is a beautiful Wat that is a very short walk from Khao San Road. It is usually overlooked by tourists but i’d highly recommend stopping in. It was built in the 18th century but was recently renovated.
After Wat Chana Songkhram you can walk over to Lak Mueang. This is a must see. Lak Mueang are city pillars and the one in Bangkok is the oldest and most sacred of the city pillars in Thailand. Gorgeous architecture and it was believed that if you bowed and prayed here you would be prosperous in all your endeavors.
